Psalm 37

Book 1: Psalm 1-41 God’s presence beside us

Title: A Psalm of David

I. David commands the righteous to not worry. (1-7)

II. David declares that the wicked will perish. (8-20)

III. David observes that God cares for the righteous. (21-29)

IV. David encourages the righteous to wait on God. (30-34)

V. David declares that God is our refuge. (35-40)

This psalm is an acrostic psalm constructed in a very specific manner. Each stanza consists of couplets of verses where the first verse begins with a letter of the alphabet. The final verse in the stanza is a single verse. There are five stanzas. The focal point of the psalm is verse 20 where David declares that the wicked shall perish. In contrast, the salvation and blessing of the righteous is explained throughout the psalm, but perhaps it is stated best in verses 39 and 40. Here we read that the LORD will rescue and save the righteous because “they trust in Him.”
